A Salem man reported that someone in Indiana had fraudulently used his credit card to charge $581 worth of merchandise.

Police responded to a car fire at 6:08 p.m. on 21 Osborne St. The Salem Fire Department extinguished the small electrical fire, which was contained to the front hood of the 2003 Pontiac Grand Am.

A caller at 1000 Loring Ave. reported at 10:56 p.m. the discovery of four unknown pills on the seventh floor. Police confiscated and destroyed the pills.

Stephen Ernest, 26, of 286 Newbury St., Peabody, was arrested and charged with driving after license suspension.

A caller reported that a hypodermic needle was found at 36 Endicott St. Police came and disposed of the needle.

At 10:32 a.m., police asked a panhandler at 242 Essex St. to leave.

A Salem man reported to police at 12:21 p.m. that clicking on a Facebook pop-up advertisement transmitted a virus to his computer that enabled a hacker to retrieve personal information, including debit card information. The online thief fraudulently charged $212 on the man’s card, which Facebook reimbursed, police said.

A Salem woman reported to police at 12:32 p.m. that someone had used her credit card to make several fraudulent purchases at a Salem gas station.

A woman reported at 3:44 p.m. that someone had stolen a statue of the Virgin Mary from her son’s grave at Greenlawn Cemetery.

The PetSmart on Traders Way was stung by slick shoplifters, according to a police report filed at 4:10 p.m. A clerk was occupied by a male while two apparently pregnant customers browsed. At some point, they left. The man also left, and as he did, he jogged to a blue pickup truck containing the two women. A check of inventory revealed that 39 units of flee and tick medication had vanished for a loss of $2,300. No license plate number was obtained, nor is there video of the thieves.

When a Broad Street woman found the back of her house peppered with paintball marks, she called police and pointed to a family on Jackson Terrace. Police interviewed the resident there, and the 16-year-old son admitted firing the paintball gun in the backyard but said he didn’t realize he’d hit the neighbors. He visited the neighbor, apologized and promised to clean up the damage, according to a report logged at 5:08 p.m.

A Buena Vista Avenue resident reported a burglary at 6:08 p.m., with a door forced and various valuables missing.

Henry Zapata, 40, of 823 Bay Road, Hamilton, was arrested at 1:37 a.m. on charges of drunken driving and speeding by Officer Gilbert Priddy after being stopped at Bridge Street and the bypass road. In two breath tests, his level of alcohol was measured at .13 and .14, according to police.

Police responded at 1:45 a.m. to a 911 call on Lafayette Street. They arrived to find a domestic argument with the male sporting a cut on his head. But police ruled out an assault and battery. All agreed the argument was over the man’s drinking, and the fact he’d fallen down because of it and cut his head.

The Red Lion Smoke Shop contacted police at 9:14 a.m. while confronting a customer caught on surveillance tape shoplifting cigarette tobacco. They asked for a no-trespass order on the suspect.

A man complained at 1:21 p.m. that he was punched in the head by an unknown person outside Lifebridge.

A Highland Avenue resident reported at 2:37 p.m. leaving the back door locked and bulkhead unlocked to allow the boiler to be removed. The resident came home to find the bulkhead locked and the back door unlocked and items missing. Police investigated.

A woman on Raymond Road called police around 4 p.m. after her son told her there was a gun lying in the driveway. “The weapon was laid on its side,” according to the police report, “behind the driver’s front tire of a work truck … facing out of the driveway.” With the hammer cocked back, the woman brought it inside, doing her best to preserve fingerprints. “The magazine was in … but was not fully engaged.” Patrolman Ryan Davis carefully removed what is described as a black, .22-caliber Beretta. No bullets were found in it. The serial number had been filed off.

A hypodermic needle was reported found on Essex Street at 4:31 p.m.

Two men were reported in a fight at the Lafayette Street Wendy’s at 4:44 p.m. One fled, and the other told police he’d been confronted after making a comment about a cockroach.

John T. Mizioch, 23, of 116 Bridge St., Salem, was arrested on Essex Street by Officer Deni Gaito on charges of driving after his license was suspended and without an inspection sticker.

Police responded at 6:21 p.m. to a report of a woman on Washington Street causing a disturbance. The woman admitted “she had been yelling and causing a disturbance because she was a sinner and she was upset,” according to the police log.

A report at 6:19 p.m. of a suspicious vehicle lingering on Intervale Road turned out to be someone lost and trying to reprogram their GPS.

A woman at Leavitt and Prince streets reported at 9:32 p.m. that her GPS had been stolen earlier from her vehicle. She couldn’t recall if she’d left it unlocked.

William Able Burroughs Jr., 59, of 116 Lafayette St., Salem was arrested on charges of possessing heroin and cocaine. The illegal substances were discovered on him, according to police, after Sgt. Kristian Hanson and Patrolmen Brian St. Pierre and Robert Cunningham stopped him for an outstanding warrant.

Paul Frances Goodwin, 41, of 84 Aborn St., Peabody, was arrested on charges of possession of six illegal substances, including oxycodone, after a foot chase in the vicinity of Chestnut Street that ended when Patrolman Brian St. Pierre was able to “take him to the ground.” The race began when St. Pierre and Patrolman Robert Cunningham stopped Goodwin and another man on the sidewalk. “Goodwin dropped an open beer can (Natural Ice) and took off running,” according to the log. The other man was sent on his way. Officer Ryan Davis aided the arrest.

A woman contacted police to complain that her neighbor sends harassing emails calling her fat. He was advised to stop, and she was advised she could seek protection in court.

A Lafayette Street man reported at 10:48 that someone had scratched a swastika on his windowsill. He worried over how anyone gained access to the fourth floor in order to do it.

The Fire Department came to the rescue when a woman on Barnes Road called at 12:37 a.m. after locking her child in the car.

A driver reported at 1:37 p.m. that his Volkswagen’s window was smashed and there was some damage to the window frame while parked in the South Harbor Garage.

At 1:54 p.m. a driver called police to complain that a woman had yelled and had gotten “in her face” for talking on her cellphone while she was backing out of a parking space off Highland Avenue. The phone critic had left the scene, but police made note of her license plate number.

Crystal Madden, 26, of 80 Lowell St., Peabody, was arrested at 9:29 p.m. and charged with violating an abuse prevention order. Madden allegedly broke into an apartment by damaging and climbing through a window of an apartment on Lowell Street, but did not take anything.

Police responded to a reported burglary at 2 Aberdeen St. at 9 a.m. Police reported there was no sign of forced entry. A washing machine and computer were reported missing.

A caller reported at 11:20 p.m. that several vehicles were broken into in the area of 7 Felton St. A witness said the suspect appeared to have taken items from at least four vehicles, then fled into the woods on foot.

Marcus Fahel, 67, of 36 Oak St., Peabody, was issued a summons for allegedly driving a vehicle without a license, operating to endanger and failing to stop at a stop sign. Police stopped Fahel’s vehicle at 11:42 p.m. at 67 Prospect St.

Brian Poor of 27 Dale St., Peabody, was arrested at 1:07 a.m. at 310 Lowell St. and charged with operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol and speeding. Poor’s vehicle was towed.

Lucio C. Chavez, 33, of 367 Boston St., Lynn, was arrested at 11 a.m. at 10 Endicott St. for unlicensed operation of a vehicle.

Leandro Reyes, 21, of 11 Chestnut Ave., Lynn, was arrested at 2:37 a.m. by Officer Mark Falco on charges of driving with a suspended license, possessing drugs and failing
